How To Avoid Google Slaps

Value added “On Page” Content. If you make a site with little or no valuable content, have a bunch of affiliate links and do not really offer any value to the user – you don’t stand a chance. This does not mean that you need hundreds of pages either, as small quality sites still work very well. The rule of thumb is that it has to give the user some relevant value to what they are searching for.

My personal crib notes below are tips to improve your “structure” which will help you stay in Google’s good books so your sites will rank higher.

When you apply these principles your sites will not be subject to additional slaps or disappear overnight. You will be giving Google the content and structure they are looking for thus insulating yourself from future updates. In effect, using their own rules against them.

You have to decide if you want to try a hit and run with the gimmick of the week or build a solid foundation… the latter really helps you sleep at night.

The Google Penguin Update – Don’t Panic

The Google Penguin Update: Google is trying to take away all the things you can manipulate leaving you with the challenge of creating a quality site that people want to read, share, bookmark and link to.

Since the most recent update, SEO has actually gotten easier in sense – it may take longer but the results will be longer lasting. Google’s message has not changed much at all, they want quality sites in the index and don’t want people trying to game them. So in an effort to clean up the landscape they made a sweeping update to remove or penalize sites that have spammy links pointing back to them and sites that have tried to manipulate the index by over optimization.

For some this is good news as it looks like many smaller sites that don’t have thousands of links but have solid content and decent social interaction are getting some play. For others, this update meant de-indexing or penalization.

How to Structure Your On Page Content

You should still keep the fundamentals of SEO in mind when crafting your content. But, you have to be careful not to overdo it, (writing your main keyword phrase 20 times, underlining and anchor linking your main keyword phrase excessively). Try and write long (800-1000) articles that are rich and informative. Each page should still

have a theme and can be based around a particular keyword phrase. When you write intelligently about a topic, “like” words will flow naturally, you don’t have to worry too much about keyword density. Just try and write for humans and not search rankings. This may seem counter intuitive but when you write in this fashion your message will be more organic and as a result higher rankings will follow.

Here are some loose guidelines to follow for on page structure:

#1: Exact keyword domain names are not as important as they used to be, still a .com domain without hyphens is ideal. Remember Google is trying to take away all the things you can manipulate, so domains fit well into this category. Name or brand your site with something that accurately describes its content and don’t fuss about it too much. Spend your time building your content and planning how you will engage users.

#2. Your main keyword phrase should be placed in the title tag 1 time, for example:

Best hospitality chairs in Toronto and Canada

* Make this specific to each page you do. For example if you had an additional page about baseball hats you would change accordingly.

By the way the title tag is one of the most important lines in an entire site, so make sure you take advantage of it.

#3. Your main keyword phrase should be in your meta description 1 time near the beginning, for example.

 * Make this specific to each page you do. For example if you had an additional page about baseball hats you would change accordingly.

#4. Your main keyword phrase should be in your meta keyword description, for example. we created a baseball related website and this is how we set it up so you should easily copy the format.

 * Make this specific to each page you do. For example if you had an additional page about baseball hats you would change accordingly.

#5. Your main keyword phrase can appear in the in H1, H2 and H3 Tags. However, you must use these elements cautiously to make sure it does not look like you are spamming. Just ask yourself does it look natural or have you forced words in just for the sake of it.

#6. Using your main keywords as the anchor text you can link to another internal page on your site no more than 1 time per page, for example:

Baseball Cards

*Use this as a rule of thumb, it’s not a requirement. Anchor text diversity is critical with the new update.

 # 7. Make sure each image you add has an “alt tag” with your main keyword in it, (the image itself should have the same name).

#8. Bold, underline and italicise your main keyword phrase when required in your copy not because you think you must do it. You don’t want to leave a pattern, use sparingly.

#9. Make sure to have a privacy policy, disclaimer, terms/conditions and a contact us page on each site.

Site structure and internal linking is important. When laying out your site make sure the navigation flows from page to page where it will be easy for users to stay on your site and remain engaged. Link intelligently from page to page within your posts/pages as well, you don’t always need to link with your anchor text. It could be an important point that leads them to another page.

Backlinks and Anchor Text

Google has now penalized or de-indexed sites that relied on backlinks from questionable sources, especially ones from totally irrelevant sites. This type of backlinking could easily be manipulated to achieve high rankings.

Diverse backlinks with “like” oriented sites is key. In a perfect world the best links are those that are unsolicited when people love your site so much so they link back to you. This takes time but if you have been doing a good job it will happen.

You can still proactively drop links but you should proceed with caution. While keeping diversity in mind any contextual link from a site/blog (could be your other micro or 2.0 sites) with similar content will help you rank higher. One of the best ways is with guest blogging or commenting where you write a short article or paragraph requesting the blog owner/moderator publish it with a link back to your site.

EDU links seem to remain unaffected by the recent slap. As they pass the most trust and authority it stands to reason they will continue to be an asset to your link profile.

In light of the recent changes I would stay away from blog networks and article marketing as these types took the brunt of the Penguin update. The footprints they leave are not worth the risk. Don’t build your business on quicksand!

You MUST vary your anchor text. As a simple guideline, to a maximum of 40%, your anchor text can be your main keyword phrase, (the one you are trying to rank for). This is usually pointing to your index or home page.

30% should be mixed with anchor text to your internal pages. The remainder should be completely random.

If you have a site you want to improve your rankings for or if you are just starting these are the markers you should try and achieve. If you have been penalized, here are a few things I would do.

– Remove Google analytics and go with “get clicky”. I never place Google’s tracking code on any of my sites, I don’t want their prying eyes in my business.

– If you have over optimized, tone down your content as I have shown above and add more consistently.

– Get some good links from other “like oriented sites” and some edu’s.

While on the topic of backlinks, you should know that Google’s new rules does leave the door open for negative SEO. There has been a lot of debate about this but in my opinion it’s certainly possible. Negative SEO is when a competitor wants to take you out and drops thousands of backlinks in bad neighborhoods with links pointing to your site.

It is also advised that your website is mobile friendly and you should read this detailed report why you need a mobile friendly website.

    Techniques For Link Building

backlinkingSearch engines are the gateway to the Internet; they are the first tool that potential customers use to find the products and services they need. This is why link popularity is so imperative. If the customers do not find your website, you have no possibilities of making any sales.

Link popularity refers to the ranking assigned to your website by the search engines, and it determines the ranking your page gets when keywords are entered into a search engine. You’re probably wondering, how do I make my link popular?

Search engines are discretionary, giving status and ranking to sites that have links to their pages from related, quality sites. It’s a simple formula, but a very important one. Google created the system, and now virtually all the most popular search engines employ it to rank your web pages in their indexes.

    Techniques for Link Building

I have been dealing with the Internet since year 2,000. Through the years there have been a lot of changes and numerous strategies to increase website traffic. Many different strategies are helpful but link building is what Google wants. If you want your business to grow and succeed the you need to become familiar with link building techniques.

I am sure most of you understand that link building is the off-page SEO step of creating or generating inbound links to your own website by way of reciprocal links or link sharing. This can be done with the use of website newsletters, submitting articles to directories, forums, guest blogging or a form of paid advertising.  There are many more techniques. It all depends on where you market and what you’re niche your marketing to.

Linking Tip: You have to be somewhat subtle when using search engines, social sites and directories, etc..

Let’s say you submitted an article into a well known directory filled with way to many keywords and links. The chances of this getting posted is pretty slim. Even if it did get posted this type of content will turn readers off.

Let’s say you do keyword research and find a strong searched keyword. Now here is an topic that people will be interested in. Use the keyword in the article but keep the density around 1% to 1.5%.  Make sure your content is accurate and informative and use just two links in the content.

Spread out your article publishing sources. Your articles may be high quality with the right amount of keywords and links. You still can not submit a lot of content to the same source. It may be considered spamming.

Variety is a key to linking success. Use a variety of relevant sites with varied title topics and naturally flowing text links.

We have all been told that when you are writing an informative piece of content and have insert a strong keyword, then use the keyword as a link for the search engines benefit.

Here is where a lot of marketers make a mistake: you must surround the content with actually relevant, expert type words. If not, your page may be read as plain spam. Make sure your content is on topic to the anchor text.

Another backlinking source is being used less and less. Finding a popular blog and finding a webmaster to agree to post your content is getting harder and harder. It is a shame because they could get new content and the writer a link for all to see.

The problem is that the standards tend to be extremely strict.  I know from experience that many writers just don’t get when it comes to flow. This technique is being used less because the content has to be of very good quality. If you are on e of the lucky ones that can provide great content, it can be a great link-building technique.
